Clinical Research
Marine Collagen #1
"After 12 weeks, participants supplemented with hydrolyzed marine collagen had a significant 35% reduction in wrinkle score (P = .035) from baseline. Participants in the control group showed a 24% greater reduction in wrinkles on the right side of the face than those on placebo... Women 45-54 years had a significant 20% and 10% improvement in cheek skin elasticity from baseline to week 6 (P = .016) and 12 (P = .022), respectively. At week 12, participants in the control group reported greater percentage improvements in overall skin score (9%) and wrinkle (15%), elasticity (23%), hydration (14%), radiance (22%), and firmness (25%) scores vs placebo."
Marine Collagen #2
"The supplementation remarkably improved skin elasticity, sebum production, and dermal ultrasonic markers….A combination of marine collagen peptides... could be an effective and safe supplement to improve skin properties without risk of oxidative damage."
Marine Collagen #3
"Oral collagen peptide supplementation significantly increased skin hydration after 8 weeks of intake. The collagen density in the dermis (outer skin layer) significantly increased and the fragmentation of the dermal collagen network significantly decreased already after 4 weeks of supplementation. Both effects persisted after 12 weeks."
Marine Collagen #4
"Twenty-two healthy Japanese participants were enrolled in an 8-week double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study. They were assigned to either a CPO group, who were supplemented with a drink containing CPO, or an identical placebo group. We examined skin conditions including elasticity and transepidermal water loss (TEWL), as well as plasma growth hormone and IGF-1 levels. Skin elasticity and TEWL were significantly improved in the CPO group compared with the placebo group. Furthermore, only the CPO group showed increased plasma IGF-1 levels after 8 weeks of supplementation compared with the baseline. Our results might suggest the novel possibility for the use of CPO to improve skin conditions by increasing plasma IGF-1 levels."
Marine Collagen #5
"After 6 months, the collagen content and antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase) activities increased significantly (P < 0.05)... The structure of epidermis and dermis, the density and distribution of collagen fibers and the ratio of type I to type III collagen were improved in a dose-dependent manner as shown by histochemical staining."
Ceramides #1
"During daily supplementation for 12 wk, parameters related to the condition of skin were evaluated at baseline and every 3 wk. Skin hydration at the heel was significantly increased at wk 9 and 12 in the low-SM group compared with the placebo group. Skin elasticity in the region below the eye was significantly increased at wk 9 in the high-SM group versus placebo. Questionnaire-based subjective perceptions of skin conditions were significantly improved for facial skin moisture at wk 3 and 12, and in the wrinkle around the eyes at wk 9 and 12 in the high-SM group versus placebo. Our results indicate that constant and long-term supplementation with SM-MPC is capable of improving the general condition of skin."
Ceramides #2
"Oral intake of ceramide over the 12 weeks significantly improved stratum corneum hydration, i.e. the moisture content of the skin, and did not result in harmful effects in any of the participants."
Ceramides #3
"Oral intake of [glycosylceramaides] significantly decreased the skin dryness, hyperpigmentation, redness, itching and oilyness (p < 0.05). The improvement in skin health following intake of A. konjac extract was observed to be time-dependent from the start. Further, A. konjac extract was well-tolerated throughout the study, as no adverse events or toxic changes were recorded."
Glutathione #1
Glutathione as an oral whitening agent: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
"Sixty participants enrolled and completed the study. At 4 weeks, the melanin indices decreased consistently at all six sites in subjects who received glutathione. The reductions were statistically significantly greater than those receiving placebo at two sites, namely the right side of the face and the sun-exposed left forearm (p-values = 0.021 and 0.036, respectively). This was similarly reflected in the changes in the number of UV spots, as measured by VISIA. Both glutathione and placebo were very well tolerated."
Glutathione #2
Glutathione and its antiaging and antimelanogenic effects
"In generalized estimating equation analyses, melanin index and ultraviolet spots of all sites including face and arm when given GSH and GSSG tended to be lower than placebo. At some sites evaluated, subjects who received GSH showed a significant reduction in wrinkles compared with those taking placebo. A tendency toward increased skin elasticity was observed in GSH and GSSG compared with placebo. There were no serious adverse effects throughout the study. Conclusion: We showed that oral glutathione, 250 mg/d, in both reduced and oxidized forms effectively influences skin properties. Overall, glutathione in both forms are well tolerated."
Glutathione #3
"A significant skin lightening was observed after 12 weeks of oral supplementation with L-Cystine associated with L-Glutathione. This combination also induced a significant reduction in the size of facial dark spots after 6 and 12 weeks. It is noteworthy that the observed effects were not only significantly better than those obtained with placebo, but also with L-Cystine alone or L-Glutathione alone."
Probiotics #1
"Skin hydration, wrinkles, skin gloss, and skin elasticity were measured every 4 weeks during the study period. There were significant increases in the skin water content in the face (p<0.01) and hands (p<0.05) at week 12 in the probiotic group. Transepidermal water loss decreased significantly in both groups at weeks 4, 8, and 12 (p<0.001 compared to baseline), and was suppressed to a greater extent in the face and forearm in the probiotic group at week 12. Volunteers in the probiotic group had a significant reduction in wrinkle depth at week 12, and skin gloss was also significantly improved by week 12. Finally, skin elasticity in the probiotic group improved by 13.17% (p<0.05 vs. controls) after 4 weeks and by 21.73% (p<0.01 vs. controls) after 12 weeks. These findings are the preliminary confirmation of the anti-aging benefit to the skin of L. plantarum HY7714 as a nutricosmetic agent."
Probiotics #2
Oral intake of heat-killed cells of Lactococcus lactis strain H61 promotes skin health in women
"In conclusion, we used a non-invasive mechanical method and self-evaluation survey to show that heat-killed cells of L. lactis strain H61 improved skin properties such as skin hydration and apparent fair follicles in middle-aged and aged Japanese women."
Probiotics #3
"Among them, the comparison between the average diameters of inhibition zones showed that the synbiotic combination of Lactobacillus acidophilus A001F8 and CLE significantly increased the inhibition zone diameters against C. acnes, compared to the use of Lactobacillus acidophilus A001F8 or CLE alone (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the synbiotics of probiotic LAB and CLE showed synergistic antibacterial effects against C. acnes, suggesting therapeutic potential for this synbiotic combination in the development of cosmetics or medicine against C. acnes."
